Restorative Justice – Guiding Principles for Communities and   Organizations
Portland:  April 4, 2014 (Early   Deadline:  March 5)

How do we respond   meaningfully to harmful or criminal actions? Based on the principles of   restorative justice, this workshop offers a framework for answering this   question as it relates to your own context. The timeless philosophy of   restorative justice invites people to look beyond a merely punitive view of   justice and discipline. Instead, there is a focus on the needs of everyone   involved, emphasizing direct accountability, reparation, prevention, dialogue   and, in some cases, renewed relationship. If you work in a community, school,   government or other organizational setting and make decisions about how to   respond to harmful actions, this workshop will provide you with insights for   incorporating restorative justice principles into your environment.

Early registration rate:  $170;  Regular registration   rate:  $190

Making a List for God – It’s a Good Thing!

Greetings friends at Sunrise,

In this Season after Epiphany, we are looking for manifestations of God in our lives and in the world.  Our faith tells us that the Light of God shines through all the world, and that there is nowhere that God cannot be found.

There is a song in our Methodist collection that comes from Zimbabwe, and was originally sung in the Shona language. The song is “There’s No One in This World Like Jesus”  (Worship and Song #3036)  The chorus of this song is “I’m running, running, searching, searching.  I’m turning, turning, searching, searching. I’m searching, searching every-where.  There’s no one, there’s no one like him.”

This song, which in Africa is acted out in dance, is of people looking to find someone as good as Jesus in their lives.  And they do not find anyone who can compare to Jesus.  Continue reading

Fifteen Outreach Ideas for Easter

15 outreach ideas for Easter
By Eric Seiberling

Easter, the most important day of the Christian calendar, offers an opportunity to tell the most important story ever told: the story of the Resurrection of Christ, the defeat of death, the victory over sin and the promise of new life for people everywhere. It defines our Christian faith and represents the ultimate message of hope.

Easter presents the largest attendance weekend of the year for U.S. churches. Start planning now to develop ways to introduce your community to your church, so they may come and hear the story of the risen Christ.

Focus on invitation, not advertising

Lifeway research shows that 56 percent to 63 percent of unchurched people are willing to receive information from friends, family or neighbors, while only 10 percent are likely to respond to advertising.

Clearly, marketing and advertising is meant to support the much more effective methods of making connections through love and friendship.

1. Invitation. A simple personal invitation to talk and join your community of love may be well received by those who are close to you. Continue reading
